The digital edition of DARE is the result of decades of work by hundreds of people, most of whom are listed here: DARE Staff, Students, Volunteers, and Other Contributors. In addition to those contributors of work, words, and financial support in the creation of the print edition, we are happy to acknowledge those who have made the transition to an electronic edition a reality.

Beginning in 2002, Stephen Perkins, of dataformat.com (now IDM USA), and Paul Hayslett, of Cow Bay Software, began the process of compiling the DTD, converting DARE’s ASCII text files of the existing volumes to XML, and setting up an electronic editing program with DARE’s specifications. More recently, they adapted our utilities programs to a web version for in-house use, and they have been serving as liaisons with staff at Harvard University Press. Throughout the decade-long process, they have been easy to work with, unfailingly helpful, and exceedingly generous. Recently Allan Orsnes, a colleague at IDM, has also provided assistance with alacrity and cheer.

At Harvard University Press, special thanks go to Emily Arkin, Adriana Cloud, and Bryan Cholfin, who painstakingly studied DARE’s lexicographic practices for transmission to the programmers at iFactory (now Safari Books Online). We are grateful for their dedication to the project and their assiduous attention to minute detail. For their enthusiasm for the endeavor, we thank HUP Director William P. Sisler and Editor-in-Chief Susan Wallace Boehmer.

Administrators and colleagues at the University of Wisconsin–Madison have been supportive in many ways. We are particularly glad to acknowledge the assistance of Graduate School Dean Martin T. Cadwallader and Associate Dean Susan C. Cook; College of Letters and Science Dean Gary D. Sandefur and Associate Dean Susan M. Zaeske; Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Paul M. DeLuca, Jr.; Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration Darrell L. Bazzell; Interim Chancellor David Ward; the Brittingham Fund, Inc.; English Department Chair Theresa M. Kelley; and fellow linguists Anja Wanner, Joseph C. Salmons, Monica A. Macaulay, and Robert B. Howell.

Significant financial support has been generously provided by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation,1 the National Endowment for the Humanities,2 the National Science Foundation,3 the Franklin Philanthropic Foundation, the American Dialect Society, and the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation. Additional gifts from an anonymous donor, smaller foundations, and many generous individuals have helped to make the work on this digital edition possible.

  1. As the primary private foundation to support national humanities projects, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has been essential to DARE’s success. We are grateful for its substantial support, with ten grants having been awarded since 1977.
  2. The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is an independent federal agency. Any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this publication do not necessarily represent those of the agency. Without the support of NEH over forty years, however, DARE would not be a reality.
